Center for health assistance in Barrio Palermo Sur

The Colombian Association of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, doing its work in assisting the most needy and in accordance with the tenets of the Order worldwide, began the construction of a HEALTH CARE CENTER IN BARRIO PALERMO SUR, whose first floor was opened in September 2007, Colombian Cardinal Pedro S: E: R: Rubiano Saenz..

The Community Center responds to a need felt by the population belonging to the neighborhoods of influence of the Parish Guillermo José Chaminade characterized by:

  • Population of Vulnerable families of income levels 0, 1 and 2, which indicates high poverty for a population of about 20,000 people.

  • High unemployment. Employment activities such as construction labors, domestic servants, workers at flowers farms and especially garbage recycling.

  • Broken homes, usually under the care of only the mother.

  • School Dropouts or children with poor school performance.

  • High rate of teenage pregnancy.

  • Domestic violence.

  • Poor sanitary conditions.

  • Consumption of drugs and alcohol from an early age.

  • Insufficient coverage in the area of health from state entities.

To answer some of these needs, The Center for Health Care built by the Order of Malta will work:
 
 
A. DOCTORS OFFICES
To care in pediatrics and family medicine. At present the Order of Malta is providing the first clinic in accordance with the requirements of Law and is building alliances with high-level institutions in the health area, to establish prevention and care programs.
 
 
B. PROJECT CLINIC LA INMACULADA – FUNDACION CHAMINADE – UNIVERSIDAD DE LA SALLE
This project provides professional support in the areas of psychology, Social Work and Occupational Therapy to children attending kindergartens in the neighborhood and their teachers in the following aspects:

  • Training in the care of learning problems and behavior of the vulnerable population.

  • Effective inclusion of parents or caregivers of children served.

  • In strengthening the tools of intervention, detection and management of problems associated with abuse and mistreatment in the population.

The intervention is done through an interdisciplinary team comprised of professionals in Psychiatry, Psychology, Neuropsychology, Social Work and Occupational Therapy, supported by group of students.

C. CONSTRUCTION OF THE SECOND AND THIRD FLOORS
For the year 2008, thanks to donations from the Order Knights, the resources required for the construction of the second and third floors of the Center for Health, for the pourpose to have space to develop important community health programs and prevention.
